Stargazy pie

Stargazy pie, also called Starry Gazey Pie, is a Cornish fish pie with fish heads protruding through its pastry crust. They face upwards as though looking at the sky. Sardines are used in modern versions, and the filling can include egg, leeks and bacon.^[1][2]

The pie is closely associated with Mousehole, a fishing village in west Cornwall, and the celebration of Tom Bawcock's Eve on 23 December. Local legend tells of a fisherman who ventured out after prolonged storms had left the village short of food, returning with a catch large enough to feed the community. His fish were baked into a pie with heads and tails showing through the crust. The story is commemorated with lantern processions, a song and a serving of the pie at the Ship Inn.^[1]
