New Orleans muffuletta

A muffuletta is a large sandwich made with cured meats, cheese and a marinated olive salad. Central Grocery’s preparation uses a round Sicilian sesame loaf filled with ham, salami, mortadella, Swiss cheese and provolone. Its olive salad contains green and Kalamata olives together with pickled vegetables.[2]
The sandwich is associated with New Orleans’ French Quarter. Central Grocery traces its own history to Sicilian immigrant Salvatore Lupo, who founded the shop in 1906, and credits him with creating its muffuletta. The grocery describes using locally made bread, meats sliced in the shop and the family’s olive salad.[1]
